OSIRIS-REx and Bennu jewelry

Introducing the OSIRIS-REx and Bennu collection in honor of the asteroid-sample return on the 24th of September. Featuring the Bennu asteroid and OSIRIS-REx's sample return capsule (SRC). All pieces in this collection are handmade from real meteorite and/or sterling silver.

About this piece

These earrings are made of meteorite with sterling silver earring hooks. The meteorite charms are inspired by the silhouette of the Bennu asteroid.

4.5-billion-year-old meteorite

While 101955 Bennu's asteroid sample will be used for science, we found the next best thing for jewelry: 4.5-billion-year-old Muonionalusta meteorite. This meteorite crashed on Earth about 1 million years ago. Muonionalusta consists mostly of iron-nickel and while its molten metal was cooling down over millions of years formed a beautiful christiline structure known as Widmanstätten patterns[Wikipedia]. The meteorite used in this collection originates from a meteorite fragment that was found in Sweden.

Science deserves to be celebrated

Work on the OSIRIS-REx mission started over a decade ago and launched in 2016. After rendezvousing with Bennu and collecting an asteroid sample the most important part of its journey is about to conclude with sample return to Earth on September 24, 2023.

To celebrate the decades of science and engineering to make this all possible, ScienceSocks designed these jewelry pieces.

      Care instructions

Silver: avoid exposure to strong chemicals such as household cleaners, sunscreen, and bug spray. Can be cleaned with soapy water if needed. Use polishing cloth (included) to remove tarnish and restore luster

Meteorite: keep dry, as its iron content can rust. If cleaning the silver, try to keep dry and make sure it is dry afterward. Periodically (every couple months) reapply Renaissance Wax (included) with a cotton swap and buff with a soft cloth. When not in use, store in an airtight bag. This will protect it from the elements. Do not use the included polishing cloth on meteorite. This is impregnated with a polishing compound that will polish your meteorite and make the pattern less visible. This pattern can always be restored by re-etching the piece. Please reach out if this is ever needed.
